Roice Nel was born in 1988 in Johannesburg, South Africa. At the age of 8, his parents relocated to Cape Town, best known for it Sun, Sea and breath taking surroundings and locations. During his time in primary school the only lesson he would really thrive at was Art, one of his pieces ended up in the school foyer.
When he was 15 he started skate boarding with some kids in his neighbourhood. After a year of skateboarding he and his friends would occasionally “borrow” there parents video camera’s to start making skate boarding videos and more often then not, Roice would be the one holding the camera and editing the videos on his computer.
In his final year at school, his class received a school assignment to make a video, in which his team ended up winning with top marks. Before the year was up, he and his best friend planned a Euro trip. After his friend decided to study, he had a very short time to decide what to study, so he wouldn’t have to travel alone. The only thing that Roice enjoyed doing was making videos and films.
In 2007 he enrolled at City Varsity in Cape Town and although he majored in Video Editing, in his second year he changed his major to Cinematography. While he was studying he shot and edited videos for who ever he could, to gain as much experience to make up for lost time. Majority of the work he did was social documentaries for local NGO’s and NPO’s focusing on youth development in Cape Town. He graduated in 2009 with an Advanced Diploma in Cinematography, which is lying in a cupboard somewhere.
In 2010, while shooting a Documentary, a photographer got in touch with Roice to do some video work for him in fashion industry. That piece was turned into a TV Commercial and Roice continued to shoot another 6 for them.
Roice has continued to do work in and around the fashion community and has shot for:
Kat Van Duinen
And shows no sign of stopping anytime soon
